Hi. I'm Jim Riva. I was the Class Clown as a kid, and I've still got a lot of that kid inside me.
I was raised as a Roman Catholic. I went to a Catholic elementary school, where the nuns were the teachers. I was an altar boy. One day, after mass, I told the priest that I was quitting because I didn’t believe in God. He told me that I had better believe in God or I was going to go to Hell … and I told him that I didn’t believe in Hell either.
I became a serious student of philosophy at the undergraduate and graduate levels … and came to the philosophical conclusion that the best outlook on life is to take humor seriously.
An off-the-beaten-track world traveler who has travelled extensively in Asia, I spent fourteen years living in Japan – and ended up marrying a Japanese woman, with whom I have a daughter.

I have written and self-published nine novels and one novelty book, all of which belong in the Humor Section. I can’t seem to get away from humor, not that I’ve really tried. Information about my ten books is at http://jimriva.weebly.com/
But this website (championofreason.com) is devoted to multi-track audio sketches I have created in the last several years – sketches about the main character of my first novel (and my biggest one), The Champion of Reason, which I self-published in 1998 (and is now in its third edition).

The Champion of Reason (Friend of Fact and Foe of Folly), also known as the Blue Swashbuckler, leads the charge in the uphill battle against foolishness. Armed with science books rather than so-called ‘holy’ books, this thinking-person’s superhero exposes bullshit and buffoonery while battling for truth, justice, and the rational way.
Read the synopsis of The Champion of Reason at http://jimriva.weebly.com/the-champion-of-reason.html.
The Vault contains early audio sketches (2013 to 2021) about the Champ’s exploits and escapades.
The Treehouse Series contains five long Champ sketches (set in 2021 and early 2022).
New Stuff is an exception, as it has nothing to do with the Champion of Reason. (I’m laying the Champ to rest for a while. Long Live the Champ!) I am going in a different direction, which is more like doing standup without an audience. Humor, of course, is still front and center.
I’m not trying to sell my sketches, and this website is advertisement-free. I’m just trying to get some attention. Even after all these years, I am still hoping that a television series will be made about the Champion of Reason. (As many people have told me, we need the Champion of Reason now more than ever.)
